Metallica

I think this piece is successful because it conveys the idea that I think most people get, when a topic of Metallica is brought up (Cryptic, Death, Intimidating). First I drew a sketch from a few skulls I found on the internet, unsuccessful in finding my own skull to work with. After crisping out the drawing, I wanted to do the actual coloring with a tablet on photoshop. Perhaps less texture, but with the lack of a real source, it freed me up to play with the shadows a little better. With a little more time, perhaps I would use this as my source, redraw, then paint with watercolors, and bring that into photoshop.
